RE: adding creative new sleeping space

Currently we have 3 little ones (5,5,7) and 2 sleep on the jacknife sofa and one on the dinette. We realize that his won't last for long so we too are thinking of a solution. We have no slides so an inflatable on the floor won't work. I'm thinking you turn the driver and passenger seats facing each other and slide them back (once rotated, back would be against the side walls) as far as you can and then construct some sort of folding/hinged platform that would span over the doghouse. Then put an inflatable or cushion on that for a single bed. I'm thinking one of those folding plastic tables might work, just not sure what kind of middle support would be needed and how much weight they can hold. Those tables do not have a middle support when using them as a table so it might not need a support for a 50-75 pound kid. Any other ideas? Ryles

RE: Advice for scout tent

How many kids/adults will be using the tent? I see some people quoting 4 kids. I didn't see that anywhere in your post. I did see family of 5. Will all 5 of you be camping? I have a Eureka Sunris 8 that has been great. It is 8 x 8 and works well for 1 adult and 2 kids, add a 3rd kid and it's tight. I would go 10x10 minimum unless it's just the 2 of you. My son is a Wolf this year and my 8x8 works great except I can't stand up in it. Also, consider getting a cot rather than an air mattress for you. Much more comfortable. Ryles

RE: NEEDED: Unusual Ice Cream Recipes

My 7 year old son seems to think pizza ice cream would be good. Haven't figured out how to make, nor do I intend to. But it IS unusual. Ryles

RE: Engine lifespan - 454 & 460?

I don't think the Allison's stated going into the GM MH's until the 8.1 workhorse around 2001-2002. I have a 1999 454 Vortec with the GM 4 speed. The mid 90's 454 (pre Vortec) had a little less power and had a tendency to overheat so be careful of that. I believe they also got worse gas mileage. Ryles

RE: also have battey probs

It was mentioned earlier but to reitereate, Winny's do not charge the chassis battery when hooked to shore power. The only way it is charged is by running the engine and letting the alternator charge it. Of course you can hook a battery minder to it so it gets a slow trickle charge when sitting. I went out to take my Itasca (made by winny) up to fill it up with gas in case Gustov drives prices through the roof and it wouldn't start. Not alarming as it's been sitting for 6 weeks or so. Got it fired up and ran the generator for it's periodic workout while going to get gas. Ryles Ryles

RE: A/C units tripping breakers while driving and using Gen

We have a 5500 and can run both airs all day long. No reason you shouldn't be able to run 2 airs on a 5500 watt generator. 5500 watts is somewhere around 45 amps. 2 airs both running/starting up at the same time will draw less than that. I think they draw 18-20 starting up and 15 or so running.

RE: New Model: Country Coach Veranda with patio

I can't believe no one has mentioned footprints and barbecue stains on the floor, no I mean WALL. How much "stuff" is going to end up on the outside patio decking that is now the inside wall of the coach? Maybe I'm not getting how it works but the way a read it is that the 4.5 feet of patio space converts to the bottom 4.5 feet of the wall when it is closed. No?

RE: Roof AC suddenly not working HELP!

Not sure how DC voltage drops would cause an issue with the air conditioner as the air conditioner is completely 120v AC. Now I'm not saying your converter didn't need work/replacement, but it should have no impact on the air conditioner. At least I don't think it would. Ryles

RE: The doghouse ...

I know this isn't what you asked, but while you're dealing with the doghouse I highly recommend insulating the doghouse. Big difference in noise and heat. I used to put a soda can in the cupholder on the doghouse and it would be noticeably warm in about 20 minutes. Now it stays cool much longer. DW and I can actually carry on a conversation at highway speeds now. Of course this could also be considered a bad thing :). Ryles

RE: 720 or 1080

Some Tv's are 720p and 1080i. Our 19inch falls into this category. Check the TV you're looking at to see if it also has 1080i to go with the 720p spec. If it does, then you are fine. As others have said, no one broadcasts 1080p. Notice the p here. Some stations do broadcast 1080i. Ryles

RE: "Sanitary" gloves

Sign me up for the no glove plan. I wipe myself without using gloves. Changed my kids diapers without using gloves. Wiped my kids behinds when they were too young to do it properly without gloves. Cleaned up dog poo off the carpet without gloves. Been vomited on by my infant children without wearing gloves or a rubber suit. Certainly don't feel the need to wear gloves to empty the tank that holds all of the stuff listed above. Quick wash and go. OK I'll even admit there have been occasions when there was a line and I didn't "drip" on my hands that I just buttoned her up and took off without washing my hands. Heaven forbid. I also pee in the woods while tent camping without washing my hands afterwards. No ecoli, etc. in 41 years of living. Ryles

RE: What do you think...dare I ask???

Lots of people also keep referring to "MY property", "MY site", "MY post". You do not own this property, the campground does. Just because you rent a site that does not mean the power post belongs to you. The campground has ultimate say on who can plug into what post. You rented a 50amp site, you have 50amps, the campground has provided their end of the bargain. They can let anyone they want plug into the 20amp circuit. And for that matter, unless you had your site surveyed with property lines drawn, they can let anyone they want park on "YOUR" site. I have never seen a campground hand me a map with "property lines" clearly defining what space "belonged" to me. Technically, with the campground managers permission I can walk up and plant a tent right next to your RV. Now I realize this would be bad business practice, but they could do it. Ryles

RE: What do you think...dare I ask???

Absolutely RIDICULOUS. Why in the world would care? And who knows, the other camper may have tried to come over and ask the OP if it was OK. We pulled into KOA in Hatteras last year and only had one 30amp plug, no 20 amp on our post. I use the 20 amp plug to run our second AC and I noticed that the small camper next to us was not using their 20 amp plug. I walked over and knocked on the door but no one answered. I went ahead and plugged into their post. We were only staying one night and I never saw anyone at their site the rest of the day so I never had a chance to tell them. And guess what, he didn't unplug me in the middle of the night. This whole "it's mine so no one else can use it" stuff flat out disgusts me. I wouldn't want to camp next to any of you that feel that way. Next thing you know people will be saying "that's MY sunshine, don't you dare enjoy any of it". Ryles

RE: Is there a way to drain my water tank?

My 1999 Itasca (sister to Winnebago, basically the same) has a valve located uner the shower. There is a carpeted "kick plate" on the front of the shower that slides up giving you access to the valves. I realize yours is older but it might be laid out the same. Let me know if you have this set up and I will try to describe which valve is fresh water drain. Fortunately the PO left a hand drawn diagram in there with the valves. Ryles

RE: 4th of July Songs

jcapps, Right. I meant Born in the USA. I am also aware of 4th of July, Asbury Park. Our Country--John Melencamp In America--Charlie Daniels Keep em coming folks. These are all good ones to help remember what this country's about this Independence Day. In America was written back in the late 70's (released in 1980) and was written about a different time but I think it's very relevent today so I'm posting the lyrics for those not familiar with the song. It sure feels like "The Eagle's been flying slow and flag's been flying low" lately but I believe we are going to put her back on the path to righteousness again. Well the eagle's been flyin' slow And the flag's been flyin' low And a lotta people sayin' that America's fixin' to fall Well speakin' just for me And some people from Tennessee We've got a thing or two to tell you all This lady may have stumbled But she aint never failed And if the Russians don't believe that They can all go straight to hell We're gonna put her feet back On the path of righteousness and then God bless America again Chorus: And you never did think That it ever would happen again ( In America, did you ) You never did think That we'd ever get together again ( We damn sure could ) Yeah, we're walkng real proud And we're talkin' real loud again ( In America ) You never did think That it ever would happen again From The Sound up in Long Island Out to San Francisco Bay And everthing that's in between them Is our own And we may have done a little bit Of fightin' amongst ourselves But you outside people best leave us alone 'Cause we'll all stick together And you can take that to the bank That's the cowboys and the hippies And the rebels and and the yanks You just go and lay your hand On a Pittsburgh Steelers' fan And I think you're gonna finally understand Chorus: And you never did think That it ever would happen again ( In America, did you ) You never did think That we'd ever get together again ( We damn sure could ) Yeah, we're walkng real proud And we're talkin' real loud again ( In America ) You never did think That it ever would happen again --- Instrumental --- Chorus: And you never did think That it ever would happen again ( In America, did you ) You never did think That we'd ever get together again ( We damn sure could ) Yeah, we're walkng real proud And we're talkin' real loud again ( In America ) You never did think That it ever would happen again

4th of July Songs

I'd like to start a thread for people to list their favorite 4th of July/Independence Day songs. I'd like to make a compilation disk for listening to at the lake over the Holiday weekend so I'm looking for some ideas I may not have thought of. I'll prime the pump with a couple. Born on the 4th of July--Bruce Springsteen Coming to America--Neil Diamond Independence Day--Martina McBride Ryles

RE: 2 air conditioners.

Dont give up on adding a second unit. It sounds like you probably already have the wiring in place. As stated above you can do a search an tapping into your genny circuit to run the second AC on a seperate cord plugged into the 20amp plug on most poles. If you are on genny power you can run both. If plugged in you will find that 90% or more of locations have a 30amp and a 20amp plug. Again, this will allow you to run both. If you are having issues cooling your unit with a 13,500 BTU unit, I don't think upgrading it to a 15,000 BTU is going to resolve your issues. I tapped into the genny circuit myself for less than $10 worth of parts, but there is a pre-wired solution that's about $100 that's pretty easy to hook up. Ryles
